CIA confirms that it contracted the mafia to assassinate Fidel

WASHINGTON, June 26.—The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) planned to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro at the beginning of the 1960s, using two of the most wanted gangsters of the era, who would be paid $150,000, according to documents published today.

The text, released by the National Security Archive at the George Washington University, is contained in the 693 pages recently declassified by the Agency, entitled “Family Jewels,” in which there is evidence covering a quarter of a century of violations of that espionage agency’s own constitution, reported PL.

The assassination plan was reported in the U.S. press in 1971 but has never been confirmed until now. According to one of the memorandums, CIA official Richard Bisell contacted Colonel Sheffield Edwards in August 1960 to determine if the Agency’s security office had someone available who could provide advice for a delicate “gangster-style” mission.

“The target was Fidel Castro,” specifies the document, which at one point clarifies that the plan was extremely delicate and so only a small group of individuals had been informed.

Robert Maheu, a safe source at the Security Office, suggested mafia member Johnny Roselli, who said he was willing to introduce him to a friend of his named Sam Gold, linked to “Cuban people”.

Maheu, Gold – whose real name was Momo Salvatore Giancana – and another individual, Joe, the notorious gangster Santos Traficante, were on the U.S. Attorney General’s list of the 10 most wanted men, underlines the document.

The answer is “not much.” Although most conspiracy theorists might have you believe otherwise, the agency waited 24 years to release the documents for a reason, and that reason was precisely for the documents to lose all their political importance. The CIA still violated international law when trying to kill Castro; they still violated national law when going through private mail and wiretapping journalists with no authorization and they still violated all morality and common sense when associating with mob bosses. But, honestly, so what? Castro and Cuba have only a tiny fraction of the importance they had at the time, the mob bosses of the time are probably dead and the illegal wiretappings, well, these still happen, but the people don't seem to care about them today, let alone about some decades-old civil rights violations. The facts unveiled by the reports won't change anything today, inside or outside the CIA.

Mindset huh?
